Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Hunt

March 2025

We are thrilled to have you with us and are excited to be part of your journey. Motsomi Safaris is offering a remarkable opportunity for six learners. This year, the learners will be introduced to the world of hunting, where they will receive hands-on training in firearm safety and shot placements. The program also involves local farmers in our area, who generously volunteer to act as a father for the learners, taking them out on their farms for the opportunity to hunt an animal.
The meat from the animals that the learners hunt will be processed and donated to the children’s home, providing an additional benefit to the community. As a special gesture, Nylstroom Taxidermy contributes by donating a tanned hide to each learner, a lasting memory of the animal they successfully hunted.
This initiative not only teaches valuable life skills but also fosters a sense of responsibility, connection to the land, and community involvement for the learners. It’s a beautiful way of combining education, nature, and charity, ensuring both the growth of the learners and the well-being of the children at the Children’s home.

Wounded Warriors Hunt

March 2024

We were again fortunate to host the following vets from the Keystone Wounded Warrior project:
Dave & Frank
Thanks to Karl Bauer

1st time safari hunter. No comparison to hunting in NJ(USA). I totally enjoyed my trip and hunting with our PH, “PC” and Tracker “Patrick”. Pieter was an excellent host, and the Korongo Camp was very comfortable. Everyone working at the camp was pleasant and accommodating. I’m looking forward to a return trip in the near future.

David Mormak

“This was an incredible hunt in Africa with Motsomi. So, this was a first for me, I have never done any big game hunting. Everyone at Motsomi were so gracious, understanding, and supportive. I was amazed at the organization and professionalism shown by all the staff.

Dirk and PC took me under their wings and taught me so much! I harvested every animal on my bucket list and more. PC was amazing and extremely intelligent. He taught this old guy some new tricks. His tracking and eagle eyes located every animal before anyone else saw them. And, if we did a good job, PC would buy us ice cream. Peter and Nadia were gracious hosts at Korongo Lodge. My buddy Peter always made sure my cup was full and cigar lit. The Matriarch of the family toured us around her home at the Main Lodge. The entire Motsomi Safaris were absolutely gorgeous!

Patrick and Jeff worked so hard to ensure we were all enjoying our hunts and catered to all our needs. PC and Patrick really put me on track and make a great team! The Chef, Maxwell, prepared every meal superbly and everything was delicious. We ate and drank like kings. Be careful, I might try and steal him.

I thought this was a once in a lifetime, but the Motsomi Family made it so carefree and easy. I am already planning to take my wife to Motsomi Safaris. It will be a long time before I forget the smoking and joking around the fires every night. I could have stayed another week and still haven’t had seen everything.

Thank you so very much”.

Abraham Kriel Childrenshome Vacation Week

December 2023

This is one of the biggest highlights in our year, we cherish every moment we get to spend with the kids every time they come to visit us.

This year was not different, we had a birthday, game drive to see a baby Rhino, spending the day at Sun City Valley of Waves, playing in the water at the lodge or outside on the lawn, having as much ice cream as possible and do not forget the Christmas Tree with

a special present for each and everyone.

Our main goal is to have this children forget everything that has been bad over the years and for the week just to focus on being children, playing, swimming, getting presents, etc.

We would just like to thank everyone that helps to make this a weekend to remember for each child.

Thanks to Karl Bauer.

Our time with Motsomi was an amazing experience. This was our first trip and not our last. Food was excellent! We always felt welcome. The PH was so knowledgeable not only in hunting but during our Kruger trip. We were able to get planned animals plus some others. Every person at the lodge was amazing.
Heather and Dave,

NJ, USA

Being the first time, I travelled to Africa, the experience was more than I expected. Not only the seeing of the animals (the variety), the PH and support staff were tremendous. Any and all of our wants and needs were addressed immediately. It has been one of the most exhilarating adventures I have been on. I look forward to coming back for my next adventure. PH, Marco and his tracker, Isaac, were without a doubt the most knowledgeable and helpful in all ways for me to get my animals. Chef, Maxwell is a total gem and worth every ounce you pay him. His cooking was supreme, and each meal was anticipated! His cooking put him above the cooks I have seen. Your support staff was outrageously supportive and helpful in all ways. This entire crew made my first adventure in Africa set the bar for the future.

Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Hunt

March 2022

We cherish every moment we get to spend with the kids every time they come to visit us.
This year was a little bit more special, they got to spend the entire Easter Weekend with us. They arrived Thursday morning, and because we knew that the rain was coming we started the hunting preparations as soon as they hit base. Firstly, Marco and PC introduced them to the world of hunting by showing them how a rifle works, where and how to shoot an animal and of course, rifle safety.
After the lessons all the kids’ tummies were rumbling and lunch was served, they then headed out to the shooting range and as soon as everyone was happy that they will hit the target, they headed out to the bush. Each time the kids come to hunt they get assigned a “dad” for the weekend. The dad is responsible to take them out and guide them to shoot their animal.
After everyone came back from the bush, well some of the guys got stuck in the mud, which is a story for another day, dinner over the fire was served. Perfectly cooked steaks over the open fire was definitely a treat after a long day, and speaking of treats yes, there was cake for dessert.
The next morning started with a hot cup of coffee and home made rusks and cookies.
The kids and the “dad’s” headed out for another adventurous day. Slowly, but surely the animals started to come in. Each kid smiling as broad as the horizon. It is truly worth it to see these happy faces returning after a successful hunt. For most of the kids this was the first time hunting an animal, and in South Africa it is tradition that you get your face smeared in blood after your first kill. They were wearing their bloody stripes with pride and so much joy.
The evening the smell of “potjie kos” overtook the camp and as each kid started to settle in for dinner the stories of the day started making their way to any ear that would listen. The stories got told with an endless amount of laughter, encouragement, pride, excitement and of course each story ended with the biggest appreciation.
After dinner, each kid got a packet filled with chocolate eggs and bunnies.
Happy hearts went to bed.
Saturday morning cups filled with hot coffee and home-made rusks again made each kid ready for the day ahead. This day meant rain, and a lot of it.
The kids that still needed to get their animal headed out early morning to see if they can get lucky before the rain started to pour down.
The kids that stayed in camp had a movie day and played in the rain; some even took on the swimming pool.

Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Visit

December 2021

Once again we were privileged to welcome the kids from Abraham Kriel Children’s home to our Main lodge.  A wet day arriving at the lodge from a much needed thunderstorm, but that did not stop them from jumping in the pool. Tuesday and Wednesday was spend mainly in the pool in between a picnic under the shade of the acacia trees. Thursday they enjoyed a fun filled day at Sun City’s Waterpark The Valley of Waves.  Upon arrival they dropped everything and disappeared to only return when their bellies started rumbling. This was taken care of with hamburgers and lots of ice cream, then they all disappeared again, what a task it was to round them all up after a tiring day!  Next day they slept in and we had a Christmas tree that evening, with lots of presents.  They could hardly contain their excitement to rip open their gifts and see what Santa Clause brought them this year, they were not disappointed and went to bed satisfied and content.  Saturday morning early they were off to Madikwe Game Reserve for the day. For many the first opportunity to see the African wildlife in their natural habitat, they were not disappointed and Cheetahs, Rhinos, Elephants and many plains game were spotted during the game drive.  In the heat of the day everyone jumped in the pool. A Bunch of very tired but happy kids returned to the lodge late afternoon.  Sunday it was time to say good bye and return to reality, after a week of just being kids and enjoying themselves.

It has been annual event for the past 19 years and we will continue with it. Thank you to everyone that always help to make this a very special week for the kids.

We were again fortunate to host the following vets from the Keystone Wounded Warrior project:

My first African hunt. I was so pleased with my experience, Pieter and the staff made my 1st time in Africa a dream come true. I could not believe the attention to detail they provided. I felt like a king. Food was extraordinary. PH and tracker were very knowledgeable. I learned so much as well as being able to harvest my dream animals. I used a rifle and crossbow to harvest a Zebra, Wildebeest, Impala and Blesbuck. It was also my birthday and I even got a cake and a gift. I really felt like family. I definitely plan to return. The best hunt I have ever been on. You will not be disappointed. Thank you Pieter, Ria, PC and all the staff!

Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Visit at Nyala Lodge

December 2020

On the 8th of December we where again very fortunate to have the kids from Abraham Kriel Children’s home in Nylstroom to visit us.

When they arrived lunch was served and the pool was ready to be splashed in.

Every morning they were greeted with Juanita’s – baked rusks and hot coffee to start the day. We then had some brunch and the evenings they were treated with some game meat and of course each got a big scoop of Ice Cream before heading to bed.

Due to Covid we were not able to visit Sun City Valley of the Waves this year so we had to make alternative arrangements.  On Thursday the boys left early morning for Moladeti dam to catch some fish and the girls were treated to a SPA DAY at the lodge.  Not much luck with the fishing but the girls had a nice body massage with a mani and pedi to make them feel like princesses.

The next morning they had a relaxing day next to the pool while enjoying watermelons in the sun.  And when the sun sat in the west it was present time……soon the Lodge was filled with wrapping paper, a lot of smiles, laughter and satisfied hearts.

On Saturday they went to Madikwe for a nice game drive on a open vehicle, visit the cheetah project they have going on there and then had breakfast while cooling of in the pool.  They returned late afternoon to the lodge, tired but content.

The last morning everyone was rushed out of bed since some of them had prior arrangements and they had to leave early that morning.

Each one always leave a special mark and are missed when they leave the lodge.  Until next year….

Abraham Kriel Children’s Home visit to Nyala Lodge

December 2019

On the 3rd of December we where again very fortunate to have the kids from Abraham Kriel Children’s home in Nylstroom visit us.

When they arrived lunch was served and the pool was ready to be splashed in.

The evening we realised they brought the rain along, the heavens opened up and the blessings started to pour down. The rain didn’t stop the kids from having loads of fun.

Every morning they were greeted with Zac – baked rusks and hot coffee to start the rainy day. We then had some brunch and the evenings they were treated with some game meat prepared by our chef, Zac and of course each got a big scoop of Ice Cream before heading to bed.

They played board games, watched some movies, build Legos, played hide and seek to avoid the cold and wet weather.

On Thursday we were very privileged to celebrate one of the kids 7th birthday. The afternoon was filled with sweets and of course delicious chocolate cupcakes in the shape of a “7”.

The next morning excitement took over and the kids were heading to Sun City, unfortunately they weren’t able to enjoy the Valley of the Waves because of the rainy weather but they still had heaps of fun in the Convention Centre, they played arcade – like games. They were treated to hot chocolate to warm them up.

And then it was present time……soon the Lodge was filled with wrapping paper,  a lot of smiles, laughter, joyful spirits and satisfied hearts.

On Saturday we went to Madikwe where there were a lot of indoors activities prepared. Balls where flying, musical chairs was next on the activities list. The kids where playing pool and there were snacks and soft – drinks available for them. Lunch was served and it was delicious! The Boerewors rolls hit the spot on again a wet, cold, rainy day. We took a quick game drive but the animals where a little hidden and the kids didn’t get to see as many animals. After the game drive they decorated their own cupcakes and the kids absolutely loved it.

The last morning started with a warm breakfast as well as warm hearts. We are truly fortunate to be able to make such a difference in these kids lives. Along with the rain they made our days full of love, laughter, a lot of hugs and precious memories.

Abraham Kriel Childrens home Vacation Week

December 2018

On the 11th of December we had the privilege of accommodating the children from Abraham Kriel Children’s Home at Nyala Lodge on their annual trip to Motsomi.

They arrived just in time for some cooling down in the swimming pool and some hot dogs to fill their tummies. The day was ended with some of Zac’s delicious cooking and of course a big scoop of Ice Cream.

Each morning started with a cup of coffee and some home baked rusks. The days was spent splashing in the pool and running and playing around camp. Brunch was served and the afternoons was filled with sweet, juicy watermelon or a lot of sweets. The evenings they were treated with some game meat and the meals was ended with some baked – with – love cupcakes.

Thursday morning started early with a lot of excited faces on their way to Sun City – Valley of the Waves. The day was filled with laughter, sun, splashes and of course ICE CREAM. The kids played for hours enjoying the slides and the man – made sea. The kids arrived back at the lodge tired and happy.

The excitement started when time to open gifts came closer. After the wrapping paper flew off, the lodge was filled with remote control cars zooming around, dolls crying like real babies and upcoming artists busy practicing their painting skills. Everyone went to bed with a satisfied heart and a happy soul.

Their trip to Madikwe proved to be very educational, the kids saw ample game such as elephants, lions, rhinos lots of antelopes etc. and came back very satisfied some of them their first sighting of the big 5. They had a dip in the pool at Madikwe and was treated with some truly South African Boerewors Rolls and home baked cakes for desert.

The morning they left our hearts felt empty but satisfied that we made a difference . It was such an honour to have such joyful and energetic kids around the lodge.

Abraham Kriel Childrens home Vacation Week

December 2017

What a privilege to once again have 13 children from the Abraham Kriel Childrens home in Modimole visiting us for their yearly holiday week.  As usual they bring rain with there visit and we had to help them reach there destination with the 4×4 trucks.  Once here everyone relaxed and enjoyed the pool in the rain.  Luckily for them the weather cleared up enough for them to visit Sun City and the Valley of Waves a day or so later.  What a wonderful day playing in the waves and riding slides and to end a wonderful day with a creamy ice cream before heading back home.  The next day everyone recovered from Sun City around the pool with treats and cool drinks.  Christmas presents is always a high light on the children’s program and is always a joy to see the happy faces when they open their presents.  The next day they are off to Madikwe Nature Reserve for game drives and taking a break in the middle of the day in the pool.  The last day came quickly and before we knew they had to leave back to the Childrens home.  I would like to thank the donors, who every year helps to make this a special week for the kids.  Until next year!

Abraham Kriel Childrenshome – Modimole – HUNT 2015

19 April 2015 9 boys from the Abraham Kriel Childrens home in Modimole arrived at our lodge.  They were accompanied by the head of the Childrens home and her husband, Mrs Gerda van der Merwe.  We gave them a light meal and got everyone to their rooms to unpack.  The afternoon was spent teaching them about shot placement and animal tracks as well as different calibre rifles.  They then had the opportunity to go to the shooting ranch and take some shots with a hunting rifle on a paper target.

That evening we had dinner around the fire.  Each boy was assigned a “DAD” that will take care of him the next day.

Early the next morning we had them out of bed with coffee and a muffin, some fruit and water for the hunt, and then they were off in different directions for the hunt.

Daniel was the first to shoot an Impala ram and could not stop smiling.  After that the animals start coming in, one by one.  Each and every child got at least one animal.

All the meat was processed at the meat room and send back to the Childrens home.  Nylstroom Taxidermy arranged with Oasis tannery to tan the hides and send it to them.  The taxidermist will put every boy’s horns on a plague for them and deliver it to them.

It is a prevoulige to have this boys every time for hunting.

4 PH’e that is also PHASA members helped out with the Hunt:

  • Pieter Potgieter (Motsomi Safaris)
  • Marco Schoonwinkel (Motsomi Safaris)
  • Antonie Lotter (Swift Dip)
  • Juan-Louis Viljoen (Numzaan Safaris)

Thanks to everyone that donated animals or took the time to be a “DAD” for the boys, they really appreciated it and were so proud of their animals.

OCTOBER 2008

Dear staff of Motsomi

Thank you all so much for this experience!  I had so much fun along this journey of hunting.  It will be a memory I wont forget since it was also my firtst time killing an animal.  The best part of hunting the animals was probably stalking them and then seeing them.  Some memory that I wont forget is the exicetment Shaun had when I shot each animal or when Ryan was my dad`s PH, and together when they got that impala.  Man, the excietment on their faces was a sight to see!  Agian I thank you all from the laughts, memorys and everthing else.  Continue doing what you guys do.

P.S. Shau I will be sure to come back to go on that cape buffalo hunt with ya.

Kelsey Ruark

Thank you, you guys of Motsomi staff.  Kelsey and I really had a lot of fun expecially with Kelsey bloodface from her 1st kill.  We really enjoyed the food and the company.  That impala hunt with Ryan and Shaun switching jobs will always be in our memorys.  Thanks for the good memorys and jokes (Ryan).

Thanks Peter, Ryan and Shaun

From our hearts

Jim, Chris, Tyler, Trevor Ruark

Thank you so much for making Eli’s dream a reality.  When we came to SA we did not expect to be taken care of so well.  The kindness and compassion you all show is quite the inspiration. We had the most amazing time in your country and were able to get some absolutely beautiful animals! We are already saving up to return soon, in the meantime come visit us in Idaho!
